Emeritus Professor Cater-Steel

Emeritus Professor Cater-Steel is Chair of the Governing Body and a consultant with a track record in advising providers on Higher Education policy and curriculum. She is a member of TEQSA’s Register of External Experts and has several governance roles with Higher Education Providers (HEPs).

She had previously enjoyed a long and distinguished career at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) (1995-2018) as Lecturer and then Professor of Information Systems. Her areas of expertise incl Nikola Babovic ude systems analysis, software engineering and project management. Her administrative roles included Associate Dean (Research); member of Faculty Board and Budget Management Committee; and Deputy Chair Human Research Ethics Committee. She was member Academic Board (five years), Deputy Chair of Academic Board (two years) and Chair of Academic Board (one year).

As an active member of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) since 1978, she Chaired the ACS Professional Education Governance Board, fostered and Chaired the local Toowoomba ACS chapter, and served as a member of the ACS Profession Advisory Board and Qld Branch Executive. She has performed on panels to undertake accreditation of IT courses offered by Higher Education providers.

Professor Cater-Steel’s career highlights include:

  • Fellow of the Australian Computer Society
  • Graduate of Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) course
  • Awarded two prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grants
  • Published over 120 research papers in prestigious journals, refereed conference proceedings and edited five books
  • Supervised 20 Doctoral candidates to completion
  • Awarded best PhD thesis from the Australian Council of Professors and Heads of Information Systems (ACPHIS). PhD received from Giffith University
  • Citation from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC): For leadership and innovation in designing and developing an information technology service management curriculum incorporating internationally-recognised professional certification in response to industry demand.
  • Life-time achievement award by the IT Service Management Forum in recognition of her research in the area of IT Service Management
  • Instigated and led UniSQ’s Community of Practice for Research Supervisors for 10 years
  • Founding and active member of UniSQ’s GoWEST project – encouraging and mentoring women (staff and students) in the disciplines of Engineering, Science and Technology. The project was recognised with a Queensland Government ‘Our State Our Women’ Award in 2009.
